Communications

English learners face unique barriers when writing, and most digital tools simply fix mistakes without building confidence. Through research with students, I designed a platform that provides contextual feedback, empowering learners to develop their authentic expression while receiving personalized support.

Challenge

English learners face unique barriers when writing, from grammar and structure to cultural nuance. Most digital tools fail to provide meaningful assistance that builds confidence, especially during early drafts when learners need guidance most. Through research with 24 English-learning students at RIT, I identified an opportunity to create a solution that empowers learners to develop their authentic expression while receiving personalized support.

Solution

I designed Lexio, a digital writing platform that leverages AI to provide contextual feedback rather than simple corrections. This approach helps users learn through their mistakes while preserving their unique style—teaching writing skills instead of doing the work for them. Through comprehensive research including user surveys, competitive analysis, literature review, and usability testing, I developed a complete product experience from information architecture to interactive prototypes.

Impact

The final prototype demonstrated how technology can enhance learning without replacing human connection. Usability testing validated the contextual feedback model, and academic and industry stakeholders praised the solution’s potential to scale meaningful language learning. Lexio bridges AI assistance and independent skill development in ways current tools don’t.
